Why is the bullfight on Resurrection Sunday in Seville so important?

The Bullring of Seville is a seasonal one, the second most important of the Spanish bullfighting calendar; but it reaches its maximum splendor with the April  Fair, the great event of the Andalusian capital and of the Maestranza in Seville.

When is the April Fair celebrated?

The dates of the Seville Fair are not fixed but depend on the celebration of Holy Week. According to the municipal ordinance of the City Council of Seville, the Fair begins the third week after Holy Week, unless it coincides entirely with the month of May, in which case it starts a week before.

The ‘alumbrao’ (switch on) of the big front of the Fair gives the starting signal, on Sunday at 00:00 hours.

Why is the most important Fair of Andalusia?

Andalusia is the community that celebrates more fairs but, without a doubt, the one of its capital is the most important. Its current history dates back to the mid-nineteenth century and is declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest. In the more than one thousand booths of the Real Fairground, located in the Los Remedios neighborhood, a unique atmosphere is lived day and night between lanterns, flamenco dresses, horse cars, sevillanas and typical gastronomy.

But the afternoons are for the Bullring of the ‘Real Maestranza de Caballería’ of Seville. The rows are filled to witness one of the most important bullfighting fairs in our country.

Festivity of Corpus Christi in the Maestranza of Seville

The Corpus party is one of the historically unavoidable events in the Maestranza in Seville, with great afternoons in the memory and famous alternatives. Since 2015, in which the then steer-bullfighters Roca Rey and Pablo Aguado faced each other, the celebration is a steer-bullfight with horses.

Sevilla Pagés, management company of the bullring, celebrates a Corpus with a marked Sevillian accent, including the local promises on one of the days of splendor of the Maestranza.

During the month of July a dream is fulfilled for the younger bullfighters: the Bullfighting Promotion Cycle of New Values ​​is held every Thursday at night. Steer- bullfighters without horses from all over Spain show up for the contest, among which 18 are chosen to fight for a place in the grand final.

How many promotion bullfights are celebrated in Seville?

The Promotion Cycle consists of a total of four steer-bullfights: three qualifiers with six steer-bullfighters and six steers each and a grand final with the best three and two steers for each applicant.

Pagés Company, responsible for the Maestranza Bullring, selects every year the most outstanding steer-bullfighters without horses, along with important livestock, to make known the future values ​​on the national scene.

The jury is usually formed by the artistic advisers of the Maestranza of Seville: Antonio Ramón Jiménez, Luis Arenas, Finito de Triana and Alfonso Ordóñez.

Why is San Miguel Fair held in Seville?

The history of San Miguel Fair in Seville dates back to 1875, when an agricultural and commercial fair dedicated to San Miguel began, which takes place on September 29. Like all major events, the fair was accompanied by bullfights and, although the trade fair ceased in 1970, bullfights last. In fact, they are one of the most important events in the Spanish bullfighting calendar

When is San Miguel Fair held at the Maestranza?

San Miguel Fair is celebrated on the occasion of the saint's feast, on September 29, and is made to coincide with the last weekend of September.

How many bullfights does it have?

The bullring management company, Empresa Pagés, configures a cycle of three bullfighting celebrations: a steer-bullfight and two extraordinary bullfights that are the last of the Sevillian season. The posters of San Miguel Fair are presented at the time of the whole season ticket.

The steer-bullfight is made up of winners of the year and announced in early September; and the bullfights are two luxury posters full of figures and equally successful of the first promotion ladder. In addition, the alternative of some young Sevillian bullfighter in these celebrations is habitual.
