History of Alcalá la Real, Jaén

The Romans left the first traces of occupation in the hill of La Mota, where the current Alcala stands. With the conquest of the Peninsula by the Muslims, the city acquired the name of Alkalat ben-Zayde. Alfonso XI conquered it in 1341 and granted it the title of La Real. The Renaissance period brought the maximum splendor to the city, which gradually lost inhabitants due to the scarcity of space on its hill.

What food is typical of Alcalá la Real?

The greatest contribution of Alcalá's cuisine to Spanish gastronomy is the "pollo a la secretaria", invented by Fernando Ruiz de la Fuente, secretary of the Town Hall, during the 1920s. The fortress of La Mota dominates the hill and has two distinct sets. The alcazaba, on the one hand, is built around the parade ground of the old Muslim city. Of its three towers, the Homenaje tower stands out, where the Archaeological Museum is located. On the other hand, the church Abacial Mayor presents a Renaissance style, but retains part of the foundations of the old mosque. Following the Calle Real you reach the Fuente de la Mora. A few steps away, the Arcipreste de Hita square hosts the Renaissance complex formed by the City Hall, which sports the famous lunar clock by the artist Fernando de Tapia, and the so-called "houses across the street".
