Located on one of the terraces of the Guadalquivir, it is the head of the Jaén countryside and the third most important town in the province thanks to its powerful agricultural industry.

History of Andujar, Jaén

Because of the remains found it is known that members of the Acheulean culture settled in this place. The armies of Fernando III subdued the Muslim city of Alturja definitively in 1224. In 1835, it was the spearhead of the future autonomy of this community, when it constituted the first Central Sovereign Board of Andalusia.

A Roman bridge crosses the Guadalquivir, while some of the engravings on the main wall recall the splendour of the Muslim period. Otherwise, the town hall and the church of San Miguel share the Plaza de España. This church is a Gothic building with Baroque coffered ceilings and a Plateresque altarpiece.

If you go a little to the north of the town you will come to the Sierra de Andújar Nature Reserve, a beautiful natural area that is home to dehesas and pine forests, and is home to species such as the lynx, the otter and the imperial eagle.

Andújar's craft tradition has been maintained to the present day and many of its streets are named after two millennia of working with clay and pottery. The variety of objects made, both for domestic and decorative use, has glazed pottery as one of its most successful products.
