At the beginning of the s. XX bullfighting reached such an apogee that the old bullring of the Road of Aragon became small for the population of Madrid. José Gómez, "Joselito", proposed the construction of a new one and José Espelius, architect and friend of the bullfighter, signed the project. Works began in 1922 in a place known as "Las Ventas of the Holy Spirit", reason of its current name. It’s neomudéjar style in brick seen, on a metallic structure. The decoration is work of the also architect Manuel Muñoz Monasterio, who continued with the opus of Espelius after his death, and was made with ceramic tiles. There are represented the shields of all the Spanish provinces.

Inauguration

The works finished in 1929 and on June 17, 1931 the first bullfight was given, organized by the mayor of Madrid,Pedro Rico, to the benefit of the unemployed workers. The poster was formed by Fortuna, Marcial Lalanda, Nicanor Villalta, Fausto Barajas, Luis Fuentes Bejarano, Vicente Barrera, Armillita Chico and Manolo Bienvenida. But until 1934 it was not used regularly, after its final inauguration on October 21 with Juan Belmonte, Marcial Lalanda and Joaquín Rodríguez Ortega "Cagancho" announced.

Characteristics

It’s at number 237 of Alcalá  Street, in the neighborhood of La Guindalera and belongs to the district of Salamanca. It has an area of ​​45,800 square meters and capacity for 23,800 people, which makes it the third largest in the world after the Mexico and Valencia (Venezuela) ones. Its ring has something more than 60m in diameter, only surpassed by Ronda (Málaga) bullring.

It has been part of Historic Heritage since 1994.

Visit all the areas of the bullring and its museum. Opening times: Open every day from 10:00-17:30. And in days of bullfight visits close 3 hours before the show starts.

The bullfighting season begins in March and terminates on October. During the Festival of San Isidro held in the month of May, bullfights are held every day, and during the rest of the season, every Sunday and holiday. Bullfights are also held at Las Ventas during the Festival (Miniferia) of the Community of Madrid in the last days of April, and during a two weekend autumn festival on October.
Bullfighting festivities begin between five and seven p.m. and last for two to three hours.

• March: sundays 22th and 29th. Bullfights and steer-bullfights.

• April: every Sunday presenting steer-bullfights.

• May: Fair of the Community of Madrid, May 2nd.

• May: Fair of San Isidro. Bulls every day of the month.

• June: Festival of the Bull (Feria de la Cultura Taurina).

• July: cycle of steer-bullfights, every Sunday.

• August: Fair of La Paloma. Bullfights and steer-bullfights every Sunday.

• September: eight Nations cycle of steer-bullfights. Every Sunday.

• October: 1st-4th Autumn Fair (season tickets). Hispanic Bullfight (Corrida de la Hispanidad), October 12th.
