The Plaza de Toros of Palencia, also known as "El Coso de los Campos Góticos", is an iconic bullring that has witnessed numerous bullfights and cultural events throughout its history. It was inaugurated on September 2, 1976, replacing the old bullring located in Parque del Salón. The construction of the new plaza was overseen by the architect Julián Delgado Úbeda, who designed a building with a capacity for over 10,000 spectators, making it one of the largest bullrings in the region of Castilla y León.
The plaza stands out for its functional and aesthetic design, combining traditional bullfighting elements with modern features. The bullring has a 50-meter diameter arena, providing excellent visibility from any point in the stands. Additionally, the plaza is equipped with a removable roof to protect spectators from the weather, an innovation for its time that has allowed events to be held year-round.
One of the curiosities of the Plaza de Toros of Palencia is its name, which pays homage to the "Campos Góticos" or Gothic Fields, a historical reference to the region of Palencia where it is located. Furthermore, the plaza is known not only for hosting bullfights but also for various cultural and musical events, making it a versatile venue in the city.
Throughout its history, the plaza has been the stage for memorable bullfighting moments. One of the most significant milestones occurred during its inaugural bullfight, featuring the most prominent bullfighters of the time: Palomo Linares, Paquirri, and Pedro Gutiérrez Moya "El Niño de la Capea", who fought bulls from the Victorino Martín ranch. This event marked the beginning of a tradition that continues to this day, attracting distinguished figures in bullfighting over the decades.
One of the most remembered anecdotes in the Plaza de Toros of Palencia was the performance by Enrique Ponce in 1997, where he achieved the rare feat of cutting two ears and a tail, solidifying his status as one of the great figures in the plaza. Additionally, the farewell of Palencian bullfighter Morenito de Maracay in 2003 is another highlight, where the Palencian audience gave him a heartfelt tribute.
The Plaza de Toros of Palencia remains a key venue in the Spanish bullfighting calendar, annually celebrating the Feria de San Antolín in honour of the city’s patron saint. During this fair, the plaza fills with enthusiasts who enjoy top-tier bullfights, keeping the bullfighting tradition alive in Palencia.
The bullring is managed by the company Circuitos Taurinos.
